Tropical Islands
Fresh water is vital, especially on arid tropical Islands. The desalination process that we use today to make drinking water from seawater is normally a costly and energy consuming process that contributes to the pollution of oceans, water and air.On the other hand, if rainwater runs off from dense populated and developed islands, it often also causes a great amount of erosion that creates sediment on reefs and ocean floors, causing corals and marine plant-live to suffocate.
Sadly, the majority of this valuable desalinated drinking water is used for non-potable purposes such as flushing the toilet or doing the laundry, whereas good rainwater is often unused, washed to the ocean at the same time.
Rainwater harvesting and a good use of cisterns can make a great contribution in many different ways to keep the environment healthy and our tropical Islands the beautiful place they are supposed to be.
